About the Spotlight
This Contemporary Spotlight will focus on weight shifting as a foundational movement principle. Spotlight instructor Alek Hernandez studied modern dance techniques at the University of South Florida and brings a strong emphasis on using body weight to support balance, strength, and dynamic movement. The class will include center floor warmups, floor work, and a short, choreographed phrase that will be recorded in small groups. Students will leave with a stronger understanding of weight placement and how to use it to enhance performance quality, balance, and clarity in directional and level changes.
Registration is required for this event. Please note that all sales for specialty classes are final. No refunds will be given for missed or forfeited classes.
Class Description:
Contemporary dance originated from Europe and America in the 19th and 20th century with various styles of expressive dance that combines Modern, Ballet, Lyrical Jazz and other forms of Street dance movements from today. In this class you will begin center floor with a full body warm up and conditioning into a longer and more intense class combo. Your class goals are increase your skills in choreography retention, execution, musicality and performance quality.
Suggested Wardrobe:
Loose fitting pants or shorts, comfortable t-shirts or tank tops with a sports bra. Bare feet or socks. No tennis shoes.

Get to know Alek
Alek Hernandez has been dancing since the age of 12 and brings over a decade of experience to their teaching. With a foundation in ballet and modern, Alek also trained and competed in hip hop, jazz, and contemporary. They continued their studies at the University of South Florida, where they earned a degree with a concentration in modern dance. Alek holds a high praise for codified techniques while also enjoying the exploration of fluid, expressive movement rooted in strong technical foundations. They believe that all people are movers, and their teaching philosophy centers on making dance both enjoyable and accessible for everyone who steps into the studio.
