RECAP | Back 2 Basics Femme Edition: Dancehall Foundations & Choreography w/ Aimee Rose

Updated: Jun 14, 2023

Updated 8/16/22

On behalf of all of us at Rae Studios’ More Than Movement, a huge thank you for attending our Back 2 Basics Dancehall: Femme Edition with Aimee Rose (she/her). We are grateful for all of our students that soaked up the energy during the Dancehall workshop and challenged their comfort zones. Thank you to Aimee for not only returning for a second round but truly elevating the class and the experience. We are already looking forward to round three!

Aimee focused primarily on female movements with specific moves such as:

  • Whining (8 Positions)

  • Jiggle (3 variations)

  • Tick Tocks (2 variations)

  • Bouncing

  • Quinting/ The Indicator

  • Mix It Up

  • BBE

  • Quality by La Tonya

  • Boom On it

For the first half of the workshop, Aimee broke down the technique behind these movements. She emphasized the importance of confidence even if some of the positions were uncomfortable or felt unnatural. Every few moves, Aimee would give her students dedicated time to work on one move they found the most difficult and one move they were most comfortable with.

In the second half of the workshop, Aimee combined some of the movements together in a sexy combo for the students to have something to take home to practice. To wrap up the class, students would perform the combo in small groups to give each dancer a moment to shine.

You can find Aimee’s resources and more on our More Than Movement Resource Google Document.

About the workshop: Everyone is welcome to join us for this exciting workshop with Aimee Rose! In this class, we are going to get back to the basics and the foundations of female-style dancehall. These are the original movements and building blocks of the new school AKA modern female dancehall steps. In the first hour, we are going to break down Whining, Jiggling, Bouncing, Tic Tocs, Quinting, and learn some of their variations. In the second hour, we will put our new tricks into practice, plus learn some of the hottest new school dancehall steps right now in a cute little choreography for your enjoyment and practice. While this is focused on the foundations of female style in dancehall, this is an inclusive space. All are welcome.
