RECAP | Desi Grooves w/ Ananya Verma

On behalf of Rae Studios we want to give a huge thank you to all of you who came out to explore Desi Grooves with Ananya this past Saturday! We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to bring Ananya into the studio to share her blend of House, Hip Hop, and Classic Indian Styles. Dancers were able to learn and improve their musicality, intricate footwork and walked away with a deeper understanding of the history and culture of each genre that make up Desi Grooves. Check out some of the photos and video from Ananya's class HERE.

Workshop Details:

This is an open style choreography class with elements of Hip Hop, House, Indian folk & semiclassical styles, with a touch of Bollywood. Folks can expect a ‘groove’ warmup touching the foundations and history of Hip Hop (and House if applicable) along with any elements from the South Asian styles listed above (such as specific ‘mudras’ + more cultural context). This is followed by a paced exploration of a piece incorporating those fundamentals. My goal is for students to explore this pocket of fusion with me while having a dedicated time and space for foundational movements. I want myself and others to walk away from this workshop having deepened our knowledge across various styles, exchanged movement AND hype in the true nature of Hip Hop, to have fun, and to PUSH!

Ananya Verma is a Bay Area native educator, choreographer, and creative director, trained in Hip Hop, House, and various Indian Folk & Classical styles. Her work with her crew (the Samasyā Crew) is largely rooted in exploration, community representation, and movement research. Along with the crew and her studio in South Bay, she owns a Desi streetwear clothing line (the Ananya Collection) and teaches across a diverse age range, embodying movement practices in whatever space she exists in. As a battler, dancer, and forever learner, she deepens her art by exploring various fusion strategies, across cultures, styles, and ideas. She views choreography workshops as a window to her to storytelling methods of dance history, and cannot wait to exchange with the Rae community!
